The SDF is unlike many other organisations in that we don't just 'promote' on System or Style. Our Federation is devoted to furthering all forms of realistic . 'Personal Safety' ... 'Self-Protection' and 'Self-Defence'.
It is vital to understand what these three terms really mean in relation to how we view staying safer in a violent society.
1. Personal Safety. This really means the everyday steps you might take to ensure your safety, in the same way you ensure your Smoke Alarms at home are working, the brakes and tyres on your car are spot on and so on. Just basic everyday checks on your own life. Such as avoiding the rougher 'pubs' and 'clubs' etc.. simple techniques that give you an edge.
2. Self-Protection. These methods are really Pro-Active steps you take deliberately to try and avoid going physical. We term them 'SOFT SKILLS', and they are a vital part of staying safe and frankly shouldn't be missed as in many ways they are more important than most 'physical techniques'. Some actual physical intervetion is necessary, be it just crossing the road to avoid a gang of rowdy teenagers, or using such methods as 'The Fence & The Guard' ... 'Power Talking' etc. Basically that really is it, but don't be fooled, these methods need learning, and practising before you can use them effectively. It's real only when Nos 1 & 2 have been tried and not been successful and an attack is imminent that we then procede to the final stages of.
3. "Self-Defence" ...These are the physical methods you use to prevent serious injury or death and try to facilitate your escape from the situation.
They are at the 'hub' of most martial art systems, and are often the main reason 90% of people take up the martial arts.
However, although it IS possible to use just about any of the more 'traditional' and well-known systems to defence yourself, few are really designed for PURE self-defence. Below is a list of just SOME of the aspects a system MUST have in order to be a genuine complete self-defence system. If it DOESN'T have some or indeed most of the criteria listed, thanks frankly it isn't a 'pure' self-defence system.
Consider the following 'incomplete' list .. a complete list would take up several PAGES.
LIST OF REQUIREMENTS.
In order to be classified as a total, pure self-defence system ANY System or style MUST contain most (preferably ALL) of the points listed below, IN NO SPECIAL ORDER!
1. It must be adaptable within reason to anyone, regardless of physical fitness, age or sex. Naturally certain physical disabilities could limit certain aspects.
